One key to getting back into the swing of life after having a baby is being able to nurse whenever and wherever you need to. Nursing on demand is so important to establish a good milk supply and foster a secure attachment between mom and baby.

Whether it’s your preference to use a nursing cover or not that’s totally up to you, of course! I haven’t used a cover when nursing my newborn in public (yet) for several reasons: I think it draws more attention than not using a cover, I wouldn’t want to eat under a blanket either, and it’s summer in Phoenix where the temperatures are well above 100 degrees every day. So….yeah, no thanks. That doesn’t mean that I just whip out the goods for everyone to see, though. It’s a happy medium. I’ve had to experiment a lot with different methods of modesty so that I’m comfortable and Baby gets fed.

After nursing my son until he weaned half-way through my pregnancy, I used a lot of different nursing bras, shirts, covers, etc. This time around I feel that I’m so much more prepared and knowledgeable and I have no problem investing in the items that I love–especially since we practice full-term breastfeeding.

So without further ado, here are my three must-haves for nursing moms.

ONE.

Bravado Body Silk nursing bra. I’ve purchased what seems like a million nursing bras in the last three years and this one is by far my favorite. It’s important for nursing moms to avoid underwire bras because they may cause clogged milk ducts or worse, mastitis. The Body Silk bra is wire free but still super supportive, even for my 32DDs (I wear size Medium). This bra comes with foam cups for modesty, which you can remove if you’d like to use breast pads for those not-so-fun leaky moments. It’s comfortable enough, and flexible enough, to sleep in; the clasps are easy to use one-handed; and each bra comes with a conversion kit so you can convert it to a normal bra when your nursing days are over. Most bras recommend hand washing but let’s be real–Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat. This bra can be machine washed! I wash mine in a lingerie laundry bag in cold water and hang to dry.? The retail price is $49.99. I’m all about using coupons and shopping sales to get the best price possible so I was stoked when I went into BuyBuy Baby and was able to use a 20% coupon!

TWO.

Undercover Mama nursing tanks. I don’t even remember how I found out about these tanks but I’m so glad I did! They attach to any nursing bra with a clasp for super-easy nursing in public. You can see how it works here and you want to make sure the tank fits nice and snug so it doesn’t ride up when you lift your other shirt to nurse. Undercover Mama recommends ordering a size smaller than your typical shirt size. I normally wear size small or medium shirts so I ordered the Undercover Mama tanks in size small and they fit perfectly. They offer many different colors and styles, including a slimming tank and lace-trimmed tanks. The retail price of the basic tank is $24.99 but you know I love a good bargain so they offer value bundles ($40) and quantity discounts!

THREE.

Merona Kimono Maxi Dress from Target. I have four of these dresses so far and I love them so much! My sister once said that maxi dresses are like the stylish woman’s yoga pants and boy, is she right! They’re so incredibly comfortable and easy to wear. I just throw it on over my Bravado Body Silk bra and boom, I look sleek and stylish with very little effort at all. The deep faux-wrap front makes it super nursing-friendly. I followed a few of the online reviews and ordered a size smaller than my normal Target size and I’m glad I did.? (I’m normally a size small and I ordered the X-small.) At just three weeks postpartum the dress fits me great and will look even better when I’ve lost all my pregnancy weight. I’m 5’7″ and the dress doesn’t quite touch the floor so wearing heels is a no-go–but let’s be honest, I rarely wear heels anymore. This dress just went on clearance so stock up now before they’re gone forever! (Or don’t so I can buy them all.)?Here is the same dress available in stripes which is also on clearance. Merona makes a knee-length version as well, which is great for wearing around the house. Having a toddler means I’m up and down off the floor all day so the maxi is great because I don’t have to worry about flashing anyone. (You’re welcome.)

Some other products I love for nursing moms are this, this, and this.? Now you’re ready to get out of the house and keep your baby happy while looking super stylish and without breaking the bank!
