Take a peek at this neutral nursery design! Maggie and Grant welcomed their rainbow baby, Griffin Thomas Hanna, on Friday, March 4 at 11:21pm, at Banner University Medical Center with the help and support of their midwife, Michelle Davis, and doula, Jules Sullivan. Baby Griffin is an answered prayer for Maggie and Grant and they couldn’t be more thankful for their healthy, happy baby boy.
As soon as I walked into Griffin’s light-filled nursery, I knew it had to be featured on the blog for the world to enjoy. The custom trim work, statement wallpaper, and soothing color scheme came together so perfectly. I loved the way the nursery flowed with the rest of their 50s-built home, with their use of neutral tones, pops of greenery, and functional storage space.
Does your nursery have a specific theme?
I tried to make the nursery a gender neutral, light and airy space with a subtle touch of woodland creatures with the wallpaper!
What was the inspiration for your nursery design?
I wanted the nursery to flow with the rest of the house, so I tried to stick with a complementary color scheme of grays, beige, whites, hints of black, and light wood tones. I wanted it to be a calming, peaceful space for our little guy.
Did you utilize help from any professional designers?
Not unless you count stalking interior design accounts on Instagram 😉
Did you have a particular budget in mind for your nursery?
I’m always trying to find the best, budget-friendly deals when it comes to home improvement projects! We originally were going to do wallpaper and board & batten throughout the whole nursery, but after pricing it out, I realized it would be way too expensive. Instead, we opted for one focal wall and some fresh paint for the other walls and the ceiling. I’m actually really glad we ended up going the “cheaper” route because I love how it turned out and think it would have looked too busy had we gone with my original plan.
On which items did you splurge vs. save?
I splurged on the wallpaper, crib and blinds (still a pretty reasonable deal but it was important to us to get black-out, cordless blinds so they were a bit on the expensive side). I saved on pretty much everything else! The new fan was on sale from Home Depot; the rocking chair was a killer find from Wayfair (one of my go-to places to hunt for home decor); the dresser/changing table is actually an old dresser of Grant’s which we updated by painting white and adding new hardware I found on Amazon; the rug and round gold mirror I originally had in our guest room but realized they were perfect fits for the nursery; toy storage, baskets and lamp are from Target.
Did you experience any challenges with your nursery design?
Wallpaper! We’ve never installed wallpaper before (and by “we” I really mean Grant. I consider myself more of the visionary/project supervisor when it comes to home improvement projects). Our home was built in the 1950s and a lot of the walls aren’t exactly level, which made lining up the wallpaper a bit challenging — but Grant always manages to find a solution when we run into old home issues!
