Instagram Tips for Photographers

It’s a no-brainer that Instagram can help grow and excel your photography business. Therefore, a neglected Instagram account could have you missing out on high-quality leads that turn into bookings. Read my best Instagram tips for photographers!

So, how do you utilize Instagram to its fullest to maximize your exposure and profits?

While, I can’t possibly share every single thing there is to know about Instagram and its ever-changing algorithm, I can share must-know tips. Let’s dive-in, shall we?

Profile Must-Haves

When it comes to your profile there are SIX things you need to include.

  1. A Photo of You – People want to know who they are buying from so make sure to show your face. I suggest making your profile picture a photo of you. You may be thinking, I want my logo to be my profile picture. Logos work well as profile pictures if you have a well-rounded brand that can be easily and quickly recognized (like Pottery Barn). Your logo will also need to be readable and visually appealing if using as your profile. However, for all personal brands, like photographers, coaches, hair & makeup artists, etc., I suggest using a photo you YOU instead of your logo. Bonus tip: Make sure your photo is a close-up shot so people can easily see your face!
  2. Your Name – Names make things personable, especially when you’re a small business. If your name isn’t included in your business title, make sure to have it listed in your profile description.
  3. Your Location – The last thing you want is to have an ideal client reach out to you via Instagram just to tell them you don’t serve their area. Put your location in your Instagram profile description or write it out such as “Arizona Newborn Photographer” or “Newborn Photographer serving Scottsdale.”
  4. Who You Serve – Are you a senior photographer? A wedding photographer? Let people know within your profile and not just by your photos. If room in your caption, add an adjective or describe your ideal client. For example, “newborn photographer for fun-loving families” or “photographer for families who want to capture every milestone.”
  5. How People Can Contact You – This is a must, must have! Your business email should listed within your profile or if room doesn’t allow, a link to your website with a contact option that can be easily accessed.
  6. Freebie or Current Promotion – If you are running a special or have a freebie for your audience to opt-in to your email list, make sure to include it in your profile. If you don’t have enough characters left, you can add it to your links page.

What do I mean by a links page?

A links page is a page on the backend of your website that is built specifically with mobile preview in mind so that you can direct your audience to specific topics on your website that you want them to go to. For example, my link in my profile is brennaheater.com/clickhere. The benefit to using a links page from your own domain name instead of using a site like Linktree, is that all those clicks will land on your website which leads to more traffic and a higher SEO ranking. Woot woot!

A page like this is super easy to create, especially if you use the Showit website platform like I do. Davey & Krista (my favorite website designers) even have a FREE template that you can snag here.
