Kaleigh and Pat are getting ready to welcome their baby girl this fall! Summertime was the ideal timeframe for their maternity session but everyone knows that summers in Arizona are H-O-T! For the safety and comfort of my clients I only do summer outdoor sessions at sunrise. It’s still about 85-90 degrees at 5:30am, but that’s way more comfortable than 110+ in the evenings! However, the prospect of waking up at 3am and getting ready for a sunrise maternity session wasn’t too appealing for Kaleigh and I can’t blame her–it’s rough! As an alternative, we decided to do something I don’t photograph very often: an indoor maternity session with a flash at this Phoenix studio.
Using a Flash
Now, if you’re thinking, “I thought you only used natural light?” then you’d be correct… sort of. 😉 Due to a huge storm the night before, the sky was quite overcast the morning of their session. Cloudy skies are certainly not ideal when you’re a natural light photographer. Dark skies can severely reduce the amount of light that comes through the windows and can cause dark shadows under your subjects’ eyes. But we couldn’t reschedule her session just because it was cloudy! So I popped my flash onto my camera and POW–it was perfect. Just check out these unedited before & afters!
Just look at how much more light is on their faces! I didn’t have to change my camera settings at all and still edit the exact same way. It really is so easy!
