SEO 101 for Photographers

Let’s talk about search engine optimization, or SEO. Is SEO important for photographers? How much time and money should you invest in SEO? How do I get started? You’re in luck, my friend, because the SEO 101 masterclass is now available inside the Membership for Motherhood Photographers.

What is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is essentially how high a business’s website ranks on Google, or other search engines, when a user types a phrase or topic into the search bar. Google wants to show the user the most relevant websites as quickly as possible, so the user continues to rely on Google for future searches.

Is SEO important for photographers?

Absolutely! With the ever-changing algorithm, you can’t always rely on social media marketing to help you get seen. Optimizing your website with SEO in mind is crucial. Good news is, that i SEO doesn’t have to be hard. If you know the basics and have an idea as to where to start, you’ll be just fine!

How much time I money should I invest in SEO?

Short answer: some but not too much. Longer answer: investing two to three hours for learning more about SEO will definitely be an asset. You’ll want to be familiar with keywords your ideal clients are using to search. I also suggest using a website platform with built in SEO settings (like my fave, Showit). However, I don’t believe you need to be spending a ton of time or money on SEO and here’s why…

Supply and Demand

Chances are, you’re a boutique, exclusive photography business who’s only able to serve a limited number of clients per month. You probably don’t have a team of associate photographers working for your business or brand. If that’s the case, you’re not alone! Because of this, I like to head back to high school economics all about supply and demand. As supply decreases, demand increases. You remember this concept, right?

Your business likely can’t handle 50+ inquires a week. You wouldn’t possibly have the time to communicate with, book, shoot, and edit that number of clients. But what does this have to with SEO, you ask?

Well, when your website ranks high on Google searches in your area, you may receive a higher volume of inquiries but that doesn’t always mean more bookings. I’m a firm believer that you’re likely to have paying client who was referred to you by another client as opposed to someone who found you randomly online.

So then why worry about SEO?

Great point! Let’s say someone knows your name but doesn’t know your domain name. She’ll probably do a Google search to try to find your website. Having an SEO optimized site will help her to find you, and fast! She’ll click, spend time looking around, and hopefully takes the next steps and contact you. The Google clicks and time on your site and help with SEO! Search engines now know that your business is what that client was looking for. It’s a win-win-win. A win for the client. A win for Google. And a win for you!
