Why is choosing an outfit to wear to your photography session so difficult?
If you find yourself with a pile of clothes on your bed after you’ve tried on a million outfits, just to settle with the first outfit you had on, this blog is for you.
Or maybe you’re just tired of wearing the SAME outfit to every session. You’ve found your tried and true but your go-to is now starting to feel just… well, blah.
When serving luxury clients, it’s important that you don’t show up to a job looking sloppy. I’m talking no messy bun and no rips or stains on your clothing. You don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed.
You want to be professional, yet comfortable and modest at the same time.
For me, especially with newborn photography, I find myself bending over and squatting down often, so I also need to make sure my clothes stay put.
That’s why for newborn sessions, I love high-waist black leggings with pockets (my personal favorites are Athleta’s tights). I’ll wear a white high-neck top, and Rothy’s pointed flat, which are easy to slip off when enter a client’s home. (Get $20 off your first Rothy’s purchase here!*)
I’ll mix up the high-neck tops I wear to newborn sessions to keep my outfits feeling different, but Target and Old Navy usually have some great, affordable options.
For maternity sessions and mini sessions, I wear a nice pair of jeans and a light-colored, high-neck, top or sweater, paired with my Rothy’s sneakers.
Remember when wearing jeans to your sessions, distressed jeans are totally fine! On-purpose holes in the jeans are all the rage.
Why do I only wear white or light-colored tops? Because the light from the sun may reflect off of bright or dark shirts and inadvertently change my clients’ skin tones. I want to make sure this doesn’t happen, so wear a white blouse is always my go-to!
Because of my location, my mini sessions and maternity sessions usually happen outside which is why I love having comfortable, yet fashionable sneakers when photographing.
Your attire for photography sessions goes beyond just clothes.
No matter the type of session, you need to make sure that your hair is nicely styled away from your face, you have professional looking makeup, and that you have polished nails (or no polish).
For those who do prefer a polished nail, Olive & June‘s neutral sheers are my fave! (Save $10 off your first order $50 purchase here.*)
