How to Set Up Your Online Gallery for Upselling

Whether you’re upselling for mini sessions, model calls, or your full sessions, having this process set up within an online gallery platform is key! I use Pixieset for my client galleries, but you can use these steps to upsell using any online gallery platform. Pixieset makes it super easy to set up on the back end, and it’s beautiful and simple from the client’s perspective, too. If you don’t yet have a gallery platform, you can use this link to get an extra 250MB of storage for free! Just keep in mind that free Pixieset accounts will take a 15% commission from your online sales. You can upgrade your free account for just $8/month with the Basic Plan.

Steps for Setting Up Your Online Gallery for Upselling

1. Create a watermark

I like using Canva for this but you can also use Photoshop. Make sure when you download you select the transparent background (this feature is only available for Canva Pro users).

2. Add your watermark to your online gallery

A watermark helps to prevent saving via screen shot. You want your watermark to be big enough that it would be hard to remove without covering the entire image.

3. Determine your upsell prices

Don’t sell yourself short and underprice your digitals. High resolution digital images are valuable! When clients have the digitals, they can create and order prints anywhere they’d like. They don’t have to order from you. I can’t tell you exactly what to charge, but I will say that $10-15 per image is not enough.

4. Create packages or items within your gallery’s store

I like to create 3-4 different options for clients: single image download, all image downloads, and two other packages. For example, if the client’s session includes 5 images, you’ll need to create a package for 5 images. I’d also suggest another package of 10 or 20 images, depending on how many total images are in the gallery.

5. Create a discount code for included images

If your session fee includes a limited number of digital images, you’ll need to not only create a package for that quantity (Step 4). You’ll also need to make a discount code so the client can download those photos if he or she is NOT buying the entire gallery of images. For example, your session includes 10 images. You’d create a package of 10 images then you’d create a discount code that the client would enter when they check out to download those 10 images for free. It is really important that you do this correctly to avoid clients being able to use the coupon code multiple times. Pay close attention to the coupon settings. I show members all the ins and out of setting up your coupons inside the MMP masterclass.

6. Create a default gallery setting

Having a default gallery setting will help you save time when uploading future galleries. you can change the settings to reflect how many free downloads the client gets, how many total images are in the gallery, what you’re charging for upselling, etc.

7. Upload your images

Be sure to select the correct gallery settings you created in Step 5.

8. Test the coupon codes

Testing your codes is very important! Don’t skip this step.

9. Send your gallery link to your client

Make sure that you include very detailed instructions as to how to download, purchase additional images, and use the coupon codes you created. MMP members have access to my email template for free!
